The Dragon Constellation-James Voorhees

The Dragon Constellation-James Voorhees

Q: Welcome, James! For readers who may be new to your work, can you tell us a
little about The Dragon Constellation?

The Dragon Constellation is an epic, fantasy adventure that brings together a group of
unexpected heroes on a quest to save all of time and space. Along their journey, they
must find the weapons and the players listed in a prophecy to destroy the Jeweled
Dragon, an Immortal sent to annihilate all of time and space. It is full of action, witty
banter, and teamwork.

Q: Thaddeus is an Immortal vampire on a mission across centuries. What
inspired his story and the world of The Ambassador Chronicles?

Thaddeus, more commonly known as Vampire, was originally sent to this dimension
eons ago with the purpose of destroying humankind for good. However, he discovered
something that caused him to sway from that initial mission, and now has him working
to save humankind.
His story was inspired by… Well, love. Love is what caused the problem that he faces.
And love is what might be able to solve the problem that he faces.

Q: Your book combines action, fantasy, and romance. How do you balance epic
world-building with character development and plot twists?

With wit, grit, and teamwork! Each of these characters comes with their own level of
sass. I am a HUGE fan of witty banter. (Please reference my social media comments to
you regarding my love of The Gilmore Girls!) And I am a huge advocate of teamwork
making life worth living. The action is intrinsic to fantasy world building and seems to
write itself… magic, cities inspired by my travels, Steampunk and post-apocalyptic
fashions, weapons and gadgets. The romance? Well… Who doesn’t love a good
romance? Or a toxic one that may or may not be the reason for all of the world’s
problems?
I draw a lot of inspiration from the world around me. Music. Fashion. Travel. And
people… especially the ones in my life who are definitely worth inspiring the characters
that are in my writing.

Q: Trust and loyalty are central themes in your book. How did you approach
writing these dynamics among such a disparate group of heroes?

The good thing about trust and loyalty in action fantasy is that they are fluid. There have
been times in my writing of this story that even I didn’t know if I could trust a character. I
just had to keep writing to figure it out and allow the creative development of that character’s story to lead me to the answer. And with two more books in the series, I’m
still figuring one or two of them out.

Q: Which relationship in the story was your favorite to explore, and why?

Monk and Vampire… Nine lifetimes later, they are still trying to get it right. And WOW!
When they don’t see eye to eye, you might want to step back.

Q: The Ambassador Chronicles also includes 10 prequel short stories. How do
these enrich the main story for readers?

Yes, The Ambassador Chronicles is the title of the series as well as the collection of
10 short prequel stories. These were actually written after The Dragon Constellation.
Writing them allowed me more world building and added to the magic systems. It was
also a fun exercise to hide “Easter eggs” that super fans can discover and explore in
their telling on social media posts. THat has been fun for me!

Q: If The Dragon Constellation were adapted into a movie, who would you dream-
cast as Thaddeus and the main supporting characters?

Yes! I absolutely have a “dream cast”! I have always been fearful of revealing it… What
if they are not available??? BUT… Since you asked, I will reveal 3 dream castings.
Michelle Pfeiffer as Ileana, Zendaya as Princess, and Jon Bernthal as Thaddeus.

Q: What do you hope readers feel when they finish the book?

My hope is that every reader can find themself in one (or more) of the characters
because EVERYONE CAN BE THE HERO!

Q: What inspired you to start writing, and what drives your storytelling today?

I started writing during my sleepless nights when I was on the frontline in the early days
of the COVID-19 pandemic. Of course, I did not allow myself to accept that I was under
any stress. That would have been too easy. And my dad was a firefighter… It’s what you
do! Writing gave me an escape from the chaos that filled my days during the pandemic.
I was surrounded by heroes and took pride in being one of them. I allowed my
experiences to flow in a creative way that gave me an escape and hopefully, allows the
reader an escape.
These characters have come alive. Their journey is not over and is very much worth
telling to completion. There are 2 more books in the series. The next one comes out
October 2025.

Fun & Unique Questions
Q: If Thaddeus had a theme song, what would it be?
IF??? Thaddeus ABSOLUTELY has a theme song! I curated playlists on Spotify for all
of the characters. They are all listed under The Ambassador Chronicles. His official
theme song is Run This Town/Posthumus Zone by JAY-Z, Rihanna, E.S.
Posthumus… Such an epic fight anthem!
Q: Which side character secretly deserves their own story?
It’s funny that you ask! There are several side characters that I am developing stories
for - Mavi, the Ruler of Gokyuzu, Cadet, the Leprechaun (who was originally killed off in
the first version of the story), and Baltaan, the Witch, are among them.
Q: If your characters could step into the real world for a day, what would they do
first?
Meet me in a bar and get drunk!
Q: What’s the most emotional or surprising scene you wrote in The Dragon
Constellation?
Tinker is the most sensitive character. He is a genius inventor but completely socially
awkward. His interactions with Monk, part of his found family, are so genuine and
humane that I find myself getting choked up when I reread them.
Q: Which fantasy trope or element did you have the most fun exploring in this
book?
The magic systems… Witch vs Sorcerer. Portals. Interdimensional travel. The
enchanted objects required to for all of it.

Rapid Fire Round

(Answer with the first thing that comes to mind!)
 Coffee or tea? Coffee - cafe con leche (I live in Miami)

 Early bird or night owl? Early bird - very early. I write at 3:00 am before going to
work.

 Favorite writing snack? Coffee in the early morning. Wine at night… preferably
red.

 Vampires or dragons? I’m gonna say Vampires in the hopes that he agrees to
fight the Jeweled Dragon. Because as we all know (or will after reading The
Dragon Constellation), “Only an Immortal can destroy an Immortal.”

 A book you could read over and over? The Count of Monte Cristo… twists and
turns and backflips! Just wide eyed WOW!

 Music while writing: yes or no? ALWAYS!!!!!

 Dream travel destination? The world I created! I am a HUGE traveller and have
drawn so much inspiration from my travels. I would love to see how these
inspirations translate off the written page and into a physical world.

 One word to describe The Dragon Constellation? EPIC!
