Author Interview – Lindz Deaver

1. For readers discovering you for the first time, can you introduce yourself and tell us about your journey into becoming an author?

Hi, I’m Lindz. Writing has always been a creative outlet for me. I wear a lot of hats in my life as a mom of 3 boys, a full-time math teacher, and a coach's wife. So having something where I can express myself may be the only thing keeping me sane. 

2. Your debut novel The Equation of Us features a math professor whose life is built on logic and order. What inspired the idea behind the story?

I am a math teacher in real life, and while I am not a type A person like Emory, writing her felt like writing a part of myself. The inspiration was Sleep Token and my obsession with how the music makes me feel. 

3. What can readers expect when they dive into The Equation of Us?

A FMC that is flawed but relatable, the best friend we all wish we had, an MMC that is awkward, but you fall in love with instantly. There is a lot of banter, a little spice and a love story that feels real.

4. Emory Carter sees life as an algorithm. How did you approach writing a character who views the world through numbers and logic?

Emory is me in a nutshell. This is the way I approach life except I am a very type B person who pretends to have her shit together. 

5. Sam Morgan enters Emory’s carefully calculated life with a lot of secrets. What makes their relationship dynamic so compelling?

They’re lives are so incredibly different but deep down they are the same. Sam feels like she’s the first person to truly see him and not the mask.

6. The concept of love as a variable in life’s equation is such a fun theme. How did you develop that metaphor throughout the story?

Love is something that almost always comes with unexpected surprises. 

7. Do you have a favorite scene or moment from the book?

The meeting scene. It was inspired by the song Rain by Sleep Token, specifically the first few lines. I could just see this scene in my head for weeks and finally had to put it on paper. 

8. What was the most challenging part of writing your debut novel?

Overcoming imposter syndrome and learning all the ins and outs of publishing that I had no idea I had to learn. 

9. What was the most exciting part of seeing your first book published?

Oh so many things, doing book events and meeting readers. Having people review my book on socials and love it. 

10. As a teacher, mom, and writer, how do you balance your creative work with everything else in your life?

I don’t…I’m very tired all the time. 😂

11. When you start writing a new story, do you begin with the characters, the concept, or the romance dynamic?

The concept

12. Are you more of a plotter, pantser, or somewhere in between?

Pantser for sure! I have the idea of a plan

13. What does your typical writing routine look like?

Oh I don’t really have a routine. I write when I can, I am working on a thousand things at any given time. My writing group helps me stay on task and encourages me to actually finish things.

14. What part of writing do you enjoy the most?

Dialogue! I LOVE writing banter.

15. What part of the writing process tends to challenge you the most?

Marketing! Getting my hook out there, learning the bazillion steps in self-publishing

Ali Hazelwood, Emily Henry, Sally Thorne

17. What do you hope readers feel when they finish The Equation of Us?

Like love doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful and that the most beautiful things in life are the ones you don’t expect. More than anything, I hope they feel seen in the messy, complicated parts of loving someone and choosing them anyway.

18. You mentioned that you’re already working on your second novel. Can you share anything about that project?

I am trying to plan out a sequel to The Equation of Us, but this story is so near and dear to my heart that I don't want to rush a story out. I want to include more POVs from Poppy and George in the second book. 

19. You’re hoping to release two more books this year—that’s exciting! What kind of stories can readers look forward to next?

I am novel coming out in May called As a Manor of Fact, it will be book 1 in an interconnected series. So nothing to do with the Equation of Us. This series is small-town romcoms centered around 3 friends. Book two As a Manor of Chance, will hopefully be out by December 2026. 

20. What has been the most rewarding moment of your author journey so far? 

Proving to myself that I can do this! 

21. What advice would you give to aspiring authors writing their first novel?

Don’t let the fear of not being good enough stop you from believing in yourself. 

22. What surprised you the most about the publishing process?

How many things you have to learn to do! Writing, editing, marketing, publishing. It’s like running a business. 

23. What do you enjoy most about connecting with readers online?

I love talking to readers in person!

24. What goals do you have for the future of your writing career? 

Be able to quit my day job and write full-time!
