Vow of the Oathbreakers / Ink and Algorithm-T.N. Finn
Getting to Know You
-
For readers discovering you for the first time, who is T.N. Finn in your own words?
An artist trying to paint beautiful and relatable masterpieces with words.
-
You’ve been creating stories for the last 10 years. What first sparked your passion for writing?
The need to escape and just have fun. I was the Peter Pan of elementary school always quietly trying to have fun and not wanting to grow up.
-
You mention weaving themes of emotional resilience into your work. Why is that so important to you as a storyteller?
We never no what someone is going through and everyone deserves to know other people feel their pain.
About Your Books
-
You have Vow of the Oathbreakers and Ink and Algorithm. What can readers expect when they step into your worlds?
Fun and adventure
-
What inspired these stories and their core concepts?
Vow Of the Oathbreakers is inspired by life. So many people get betrayed and placed in situations they don't expect. This book is all about overcoming those obstacles and coming out stronger on the other end.
Ink and Algorithm is inspired by Peter Pan and watching technology overwhelming all the kids in society. It is all about what happens when we lose focus of what's really important and how to reclaim the things we hold dear no matter how far gone we feel they are.
-
How do these two books differ from each other in tone, theme, or style?
The tone and style are very similar. The themes are touching on several things. They both touch on betrayal and grief. Ink and Algorithm dives into technology vs. Wonder and the idea of legacy. Vow of the Oathbreakers dives into self- discovery and duty vs loyalty.
-
Without spoilers, is there a moment or theme in either book that you’re especially excited for readers to experience?
That is a tough one as both books have great moments that help to develop the characters while connecting with the readers.
Worldbuilding & Themes
-
Your stories focus on magical worlds, personal growth, and high stakes. How do you balance action with emotional depth?
I just write what feels right and hope it doesn't feel rushed or slow to the readers.
-
How do you approach building immersive worlds that feel both expansive and personal?
I pay attention to the details. I want to pull the readers in using all the senses and make it feel like they are sitting right into the scene.
-
What role does character growth play in your storytelling?
It plays a huge role and really helps to drive the theme and feel of the story. The characters have to grow and learn just like we all do everyday or it doesn't make much of a story.
Writing Process
-
When starting a new story, do you begin with the world, the characters, or the central conflict?
Really just depends on the story. I have so many ideas that live rent free in my mind. Sometimes I have stories that I start and can't figure out how to finish so the characters land in another story.
Are you more of a plotter or do you let your stories unfold naturally?
I just let it flow
-
What part of writing do you enjoy the most?
Getting the story written is the best part. As I watch it unfold and watch the characters grow into even more dynamic parts of the story then I originally planned.
-
What part of the process challenges you the most?
Editing hands down is the hardest to me. I will pick apart my story 1,000s of times because I want to make it perfect.
The Author Journey
-
What has been the most rewarding part of your journey as an author so far?
Connecting with the readers and getting feedback on how they like/dislike my characters.
-
What has surprised you most about publishing your work?
The readers and how many people have wanted to read my books.
-
How has being a parent influenced your writing or the messages within your stories?
Being a parent gives me a way to view the world from a different view. I know how I grew up and lived. I know how it looks from the teacher side and just simply from being an adult. Being a parent my heart grew 3 sizes and I view everything with much more compassion and understanding. If I don't understand then I write a book and my characters help me figure it out then I have my kids read it and we can connect over if I captured the emotion correctly.
Looking Ahead
-
What are you most excited about next in your writing journey?
I have set some high goals this year but I am excited to get my book to 500 readers this year. I have another book dropping in September of this year and I want to have a launch party to go with this as well. I also had so much fun at my meet and greet. I want to get out there again and meet some new readers.
-
Are there new worlds, characters, or themes you’re eager to explore?
I have so many characters to explore that are still renting space in my head I am not sure I have time to add any more just yet.
